Pro's & Cons
Could burning shelled corn for heat be right for you?
Even though corn can be a relatively inexpensive heat source it is not for everyone.
Corn stoves do require minimal daily maintenance, (similar to that of a wood stove) refilling of the corn storage hopper, and additional periodic maintenance as spelled out in the stove manufacturer's operations manual. Those persons unable or not desiring to perform the required maintenance should use a more conventional source of heat.
However-the-home or business owner who is weary of mega-monthly heating bills for oil, gas, or electric heat and who is willing to invest a little "sweat-equity" into their heating system will appreciate corn heat fuel for the following reasons:
- Typically very cost efficient compared to conventional fuels.
- Satisfaction of helping to lessen our country's crippling dependence on foreign oil/gas (over 700 billion $$$ annually) Think of how much better off our country would if even part of those dollars stayed here instead of going overseas!
- Utilization of a totally and quickly renewable green energy source grown in the heart of the USA's Corn Belt. Corn only requires about 114 days from planting to maturity - what other renewable combustible fuel source even comes close?
- Fulfillment of the pioneering spirit still buried in all of us that leads many of us to "go our own way" instead of just following the crowd.
- Will be a real conversation starter when your friends and neighbors see corn burning for the first time. Folks just can't believe the amount of heat given off by that little bit of burning corn.
